This Interactive Simulation has grades 6–8 Middle School Life Science students run a hands-on classroom model of DNA, Genes, & Chromosomes.
Driving question: "How does the sequence of nitrogen bases in a DNA gene determine the amino acid sequence, folded structure, and cellular function of a protein?" Objective: Students will build a physical model of a double-stranded DNA gene, decode three-base codons into an amino acid sequence, and test how structural changes to bases affect protein folding and trait expression.
What's inside: objective and background, a materials list (60 color-coded interlocking base beads…; 2 flexible chenille stems (pipe…; 1 set of 20 labeled Amino Acid Folding…; 1 Universal Genetic Codon Decoder Wheel…), an 8-step protocol, a data table, 4 analysis questions, and teacher notes.
Resource type: Interactive Simulation (.docx). Format: editable Microsoft Word lab handout with approximately 920 words (~5 pages).
Classroom use: a team investigation in a Middle School Life Science course. Grades 6–8.
