This is the student-facing slide presentation that introduces the phenomenon, walks the class through observations and driving questions, and frames the evidence students will use for the Scaffolded Phenomena-Based Lesson in the high school Biology (grades 9–12) chapter Evolution, built around the phenomenon Peppered Moth Natural Selection. This scaffolded version adds sentence frames and extra supports for students who need them. It is sold separately from the other two parts of the set.

Complete the set: Evolution Scaffolded Phenomena-Based Lesson: Peppered Moth Natural Selection Teacher Discussion Guide; Evolution Scaffolded Phenomena-Based Lesson: Peppered Moth Natural Selection Student Response Sheet.

Sections: Section 1: Three-dimensional Learning Alignment (ngss); NGSS Dimension; Scaffolded Three-dimensional Learning Goal; Section 3: Scaffolded Science Talk Moves Matrix; Scaffolded Talk Move; Verbatim Facilitation Prompt & Talk Goal; Everyday Student Misconception (flawed Claim); Scientific Evidence & Intuitive Correction. Sample item: “Before the Industrial Revolution, pale speckled moths were camouflaged against light-colored ____________.”

What's inside: SCAFFOLDED Student Slide Show (editable .pptx + PDF, 16 slides).

Standards: HS-LS4-1 — Communicate scientific information that common ancestry and biological evolution are supported by multiple lines of empirical evidence. HS-LS4-2 — Construct an explanation based on evidence that the process of evolution primarily results from four factors: (1) the potential for a species to increase in number, (2) the heritable genetic variation of individuals in a species due to mutation and sexual reproduction, (3) competition for limited resources, and (4) the proliferation of those organisms that are better able to survive and reproduce in the environment. HS-LS4-4 — Construct an explanation based on evidence for how natural selection leads to adaptation of populations.

Resource type: Phenomena-Based Lesson – Presentation. Format: editable Microsoft PowerPoint file plus a ready-to-print PDF.

Classroom use: Open with the phenomenon slide show, let students record ideas on the response sheet, and lead the discussion with the teacher guide. Built for high school Biology, grades 9–12.
